Shit Just Got Real.... Sephora VIB 20% Off Sale

Well I think it's fair to say if I was approaching major hoarder status before I'm wayyyy past that now. Yep its official.

Sephora is currently offering 20% off any and all purchases from November 6 - November 10 for VIB and VIB Rouge members.

I have been a Beauty Insider at Sephora for ages but I only became a VIB member last year, around the end of November or early December. Sephora normally does their AMAZING VIB//VIB Rouge sale in early November (I think??), so I missed it last year because I hadn't become a VIB yet, and I have been looking forward to this year's 20% off sale ever since I missed it last year.  Not to mention that I've been scheming about what to get during the 2014 VIB Sale for basically a year.

Since I was super ready for this sale, and already kind of planned what I wanted, I added all the items to my "shopping cart" on Sephora's website. I'm so glad I did this because Sephora's website was having some issues because of the high traffic from all the people with 20% off coupons, and if I hadn't already added all the items I planned to get it would have taken FOREVER to do so since the site kept crashing. Luckily, none of the items I wanted were sold out by the time I was finally able to get through (except one - which I didn't realize at the time - but more on that later). I placed my order super early in the morning on November 6th, it looks like it hasn't shipped yet but hopefully it will arrive soon so I can make part 2 of this post... the one with all the new goodies!!

When I received my mailer with the 20% off coupons from Sephora they also included an additional 20% card for a friend. I asked a few friends if they wanted to use it, but no one went for it (crazies if you ask me!). So if anyone out there is interested in taking advantage of this sale but is not already a VIB member, let me know and I will give you my "20% Off For a Friend" code! It will only work for online orders but Sephora's website seems like its back to normal so it should be fine! If you are interested please just let me know before the sale ends (at midnight November 10, 2014) and I will share the code with you. I think the code is one time use only so I may only be able to give it to one person.

Alright I'll be back with another (more fun and picture filled) post when the package arrives :))

Juice Cleanse (day 3)

Wooo woke up feeling good today :) I woke up around 7am and had the first Green Lantern, plus a BIG cup of green tea, right away. After that I went for a quick workout, lifted some weights for 20 minutes and swam moderate pace for about 30 minutes.

After working out I went to pick up my dad's birthday present from Target - I got him this Nespresso Espresso Machine and Milk Steamer (has anyone used this one before?? is it good? I hope so!). I got back home around 10:30am feeling pretty hungry and had the Haute Lemonade.

I was out for a couple hours and was feeling hungry AGAIN when I got back, so I had the Maroon Five juice right away. This helped but it seems like today the juices aren't keeping me full as long and I feel more hungry through out the day.

Craving Chipotle right about now.... big time.

A couple hours later, after working, I decided to have my second Green Lantern juice and wrap my dad's present. This was tasty but only filled me up for about 45 mins :( wahhh.

Almost gave in and made some food for dinner, but I want to stick it out to see how I feel (different, better??) if I complete the full 3 days. Had the second Maroon Five at about 6pm. Fairly satisfying, but I'm starting to feel ready for something I can actually chew.

Drank my final (YAY) juice around 8pm. Feeling kind of tired in general today but hopefully that translates in to being refreshed once I start eating normally again.

More thoughts on the cleanse as a whole to come, but thats all for now. Woo I did it!

Juice Cleanse (day 2)

Good morning! So today I woke up feeling a little hungry, but once I had the Green Lantern juice right after waking up at 7am I felt good.

I kind of lost track of time while I was on the computer, big surprise, so I ended up having the second juice a little later than I meant to, at about 10am instead of 9am. By this time I was starting to feel a little hungry again but the spicy lemonade definitely helped. Does anyone else feel like spicy food always fills you up faster?? I guess its true of spicy drinks too. Yesterday I was worried that this one might get more spicy from the cayenne sitting in the water but it doesn't seem any hotter than before.

Ok I think this cleanse process is definitely having an effect on my tastebuds. Not sure if it will last but at least for now they seem different! Yesterday when I had the Maroon Five juice I wasn't crazy about it but today I swear it tasted like a Cherry Limade from Sonic. I might be losing it over here!!

Had the second Green Lantern after leaving a meeting at about 3:30pm. It was just in time because I was for sure getting hungry, luckily my stomach wasn't rumbling too loudly in the meeting!

Went for about an hour long walk / run with the dog when I got home, then had the second Maroon Five when we returned around 5.

Had the Cashew Dream at about 8pm (remember to SHAKE WELL - all the vanilla bean sunk to the bottom, check out the picture haha!). Today was pretty good but I was noticeably more hungry than day one. Plus I was basically torturing myself watching the Food Network and looking at Pinterest, which didn't help. Hopefully tomorrow goes smoothly :)

(3 day) Juice Cleanse

A while back on Groupon I came across a deal for a 3 day juice cleanse. Trying a juice cleanse (or any "cleanse" in general) is something I have been back and forth about for a while, debating if it seems like a good idea or not, but in a late night Groupon-ing sesh on my phone I decided to go for it (PS - *pics of the juices to come tomorrow!* I didn't have my camera on me but wanted to post this as I was doing it to make the assessment more accurate). It was $97 (not including the additional $8.50 in tax they charged me when I went to pick up the juice!) for a 3 day cleanse. This deal is actually still available, here's the LINK for anyone in the Chicago area who's interested. It looks like they only have locations in Illinois, but I'm also on the Groupon list for Austin, TX, from when I went to school there, and I always see juice cleanse Groupons for there (and many other cities) too! Each day you get six - 16oz bottles of cold pressed juice for a total of 18 bottles of juice. The four different juices (two of which you repeat twice per day) are:

Green Lantern  - a blend of kale, romaine lettuce, spinach, parsley, celery, lemon, ginger, cucumber, and apple. Designed to provide the majority of the essential vitamins and minerals you will need over the course of three days. These veggies deliver chlorophyll, iron, vitamin C, and much more while also helping to boost immunity and alkalizing your body and blood. (Drink 2X per day)
Haute Lemonade - organic agave nectar, organic maple syrup, lemon juice, ginger, cayenne, and purified water. The lemons serve as an antioxidant, fighting free radicals, while the cayenne and ginger help to pump up metabolism and cleanse the walls of your digestive tract and intestines.

Maroon Five  - mixture of beet, carrot, apple, lemon, and ginger. The combination of vitamins and minerals in this drink are beneficial in detoxing the blood, liver, and kidneys. (Drink 2X per day)
Cashew Dream - blend of ground cashews, Madagascar vanilla beans, purified water, dates, raw agave, maple syrup, cinnamon, and nutmeg. This sweet, creamy "juice" seems to be included as more of a treat than for the health benefits. However, the cashews do provide some fat and protein to help you feel satiated at the end of the day.

They recommended drinking one juice roughly every 2 hours in the following order: upon waking drink one 16oz. bottle of Green Lantern, a couple hours later have a bottle of Haute Lemonade, follow this with the first serving of Maroon Five, have your second 16oz. serving of Green Lantern after another 2 hours passes, next have the second serving of Maroon Five, last finish off the day with a bottle of Cashew Dream.

Day 1
So far so good! I bent the rules a little bit on the first day because I wasn't able to pick up the juices until around noon so I had a couple of pieces of toast and some coffee in the morning before switching over to the juice only regimen, but I'd say that's a pretty minor stray.

I had the first juice, Green Lantern, in the car right after picking up (about 12:30ish in the afternoon). Pretty tasty! I've had some more "green tasting" green juices in my day, so I found this one to be easily drinkable - someone who is very unaccustomed to veggie juices or leafy vegetables in general may have a harder time. This juice also has a good amount of lemon juice to it which keeps the flavor fresh and a bit more mild.

The next one (around 2pm) was the Haute Lemonade, sort of the same concept as the Master Cleanse's famous spicy lemonade. This one was also good. A bit on the spicy side, but not overly hot. I've read that as the cayenne sits in the lemon / water mix it can tend to get spicier so I'm hoping that by day 2 and 3 it isn't too overpowering.

Then around 4 or 4:30pm I had Maroon Five, part one. This one is also pretty tasty and on the sweet side. It definitely has a beet flavor there (duhh that's the main ingredient, just sayin though!) which I don't mind too much but it can be a little strong. I also noticed that this one temporarily dyed my teeth red! I basically looked like a zombie haha - note to self use a straw next time. Since this one has more sugar and calories than the first two, I noticed a little energy boost. Nothing major like you chugged a Red Bull but hey its something!

After this I went to the gym and lifted some weights for about 25 mins (nothing too heavy) and swam moderate pace for another 25 minutes. They didn't mention anything about if you should exercise or not when I was picking up the juices but I figured it would be good to sweat a little and get the heart pumping to help further the detoxing effects of the juice.

After getting back from the gym at about 6:30pm I drank the second bottle of Green Lantern right away. It was satisfying and I didn't feel hungry or deprived.

Since I started this day a bit later than you're "supposed" to I felt like I was kind of rushing to finish all the juices by the time I went to bed. I didn't want to have the last one right before heading to sleep because I like to have at least an hour or two to digest before going to sleep. For this reason, I had the next juice (Maroon Five part 2) only a hour or so after returning from the gym - at 7:30pm. At this point I was actually starting to feel a bit hungry anyway, so it kind of worked out that I was having the juices back to back. Right after a workout I'm normally not super hungry so I have a smallish snack, then I'll have a meal when my hunger sets in, usually an hour or two after exercising. The post -workout juices sort of worked this way too because the Green Lantern is pretty light while Maroon Five is a bit more calorie dense and filling.

For the next couple hours I just relaxed (I'm currently re-watching old episodes of 30 Rock on Netflix haha - I need to find a new book!). Then around 9:15 or so I went for the Cashew Dream milk. Woahhh this one is SWEET! I normally have a pretty big sweet tooth, so I don't know if my tastebuds were altered from drinking the other juices during the day but I was surprised at how sweet I found this one. It was very creamy and rich, a good one to hold you over until morning, I suppose! Although I've tried most of the non-dairy milks out there (soy, rice, almond, coconut, hemp, etc.), I have never actually had cashew milk before so I didn't really know what to expect. Cashews, like most nuts,  are pretty high in fat which adds to the richness; but the smoother, softer texture of cashews (compared to almonds for example) seemed to make the drink more thick and creamy than other nut milks. I did find there to be a slightly odd after-taste to this one, not sure if that's just the flavor of cashew milk and I'm not used to it or perhaps from the dates?? The semi-strange after-taste was very mild though and not really noticeable after the first few sips.

All in all I'd say day one was a success! I was a bit rushed to have all the juices since I picked them up late but it still worked out. There were not any times I felt super hungry, just slightly after working out but that was quickly satiated! We'll see how tomorrow goes :)

Have you ever considered doing a juice cleanse or done one in the past?? Let me know, I'd love to hear others experiences! xoxo emma

Fresh Kicks

Woo so excited about these babies!! I actually got them a while ago but they were sort of packed away when I was moving and I finally rediscovered them. Plus I feel like they're perfect now that its feeling like fall here in Chicago. They're called the Everly - black leather ankle boots with cutout detailing and buckles. I love them because they are polished looking yet slightly edgy, and I think they could be casual or dressy depending on what you wear them with. I was super stoked to find these guys on sale at Urban Outfitters. They were marked at $99.99 on sale, but at the time all the clearance items were an additional 50% off so I ended up getting them for about 50 bucks. Not a bad deal considering the Jeffery Campbell Everly boot usually goes for about $200! Plus boots like these can last forever as long as you care for them and polish them now and then. What do you guys think of these boots?? Let me know :)

Watermelon Fo Days!

Yes... I know it might be a little bizarre to dedicate an entire post to a watermelon, but this one deserves it! Its the huge 30 pound beauty I mentioned in my farmers market post. I got this baby for $10 which I thought was a great deal considering its size, plus its Local, Organic, and an Heirloom variety (Moon & Stars).

The farmers working the stand and their families were all so kind and helpful, I learned their farm is in Southwest Michigan (Benton Harbor) but they come all the way to Illinois to share their amazing produce! These wonderful people are from Lake Breeze Organics please be sure to check out them out - here's the link to their website

If you are in the Benton Harbor or Chicago area you can become part of their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) by purchasing a share in their yield. This means that each week, from early June to late September, you will get to pick up a box of fresh, organic produce that has just been harvested. Although the upfront cost is a bit expensive (Illinois residents pay $550 for a full share and $300 for a half share - these prices are a little cheaper if you're a Michigan resident since they don't have to transport it), it is ABSOLUTELY worth it when you consider what you get out of it and that it lasts for 4 months! I'm a little late for this year but I'll definitely take part in this next year. Wooo sorry that was a kind of a rant but I just wanted to get the word out there.

Somebody's curious about this huge melon.... lol

Candle Hoarder

I'll admit it... I'm a bit of a candle hoarder. Especially in the fall season because I like the woodsy scents that are more popular this time of year - I'm not a big fan of the sweet, fruity scents that are omnipresent in spring and summer. My favorite candles are from Bath & Body Works. While I usually associate this store with the 11 year old me who frequented it for roll-on body glitter and the like, I have to give them credit for the candles. They're highly fragranced (but not over powering), burn evenly, and are relatively affordable if you get them during the common 2 for $22 sales which is the only time I would ever consider buying candles there.

My all time favorite is Mahogany Teakwood. It smells like Abercrombie & Fitch... in a good way. So when they go on sale I normally pick up a couple of these if I'm running low. However, lately I decided to branch out since they have some new releases with scents that are more along the lines of what I like. I picked up:

Mahogany Teakwood (obviously....) - described as, "The luxurious scents of fine woods - mahogany cedar wood and oak - are enlightened by lavender and geranium notes". To me it mostly smells like nice cologne.

Autumn - described as, "A crisp fall fragrance that blends dark pomegranate with red delicious apple and juicy fig and notes of fir balsam". This one reminds me of a Cranberry candle I got there last winter that I really liked. It is fruity in a crisp way, not a sweet way if that makes sense. The fir balsam also helps to tone down the fruitiness and make it more woodsy.

Sweater Weather - described as, "Chill in the air - Cuddle up with an aromatic blend of eucalyptus, juniper berry and fresh sage that celebrates the arrival of crisp autumn breezes". This one smells fresh and a little minty (from the eucalyptus I guess), very nice and mellow.

Flannel - described as, "Wrap yourself in a warm blend of bergamot, mahogany and a delicate veil of musk". This one reminds me a little of Mahogany Teakwood because it has that cologne type scent to it but its a bit more spicy with a touch of musk like they say in the description

Hope this gives you guys ideas about what to try out next!

day at the farmers market

Hola everybody! I went to the farmer's market this past weekend with my lovely mom and aunt and we hit the jack pot on some seriously FRESH and LOCAL goodies. Not to mention they were an amazing deal!

We got baby eggplant and green peppers 10 for $1 (YES, ONE DOLLAR) aka 10 cents a piece people. A beautiful, Organic 30 pound Moon and Stars heirloom watermelon for $10, the farmer gave me a discount for carrying the melon up to his register haha :) We also got 5 pounds of local, spray-free heirloom tomatoes for $10 (or $2/pound). I was so grateful to have gotten these when I saw the price of heirloom tomatoes at Whole Foods later that day - $6/pound at WF! Finally we picked up some shitaake mushrooms for $7, not a great deal but still nice to support local growers.

This just goes to show you that although some people think fresh produce is too expensive you can make it fit your budget if you know WHERE and WHEN to look. This means buying LOCAL and SEASONAL fruits and veggies as much as possible. Because when you buy something that was grown locally (within 200 miles or less of where you live) it will be fresher and most likely cheaper since the farmers don't have to pay as much to transport it. Buying produce in season is also very important in cutting costs and enhancing deliciousness!

I'm definitely no expert, but I found a ton of great resources - including the seasonality charts  - HERE on CUESA's website (stands for Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture) so make sure to check them out too! The charts on their website are specific to the greater Bay Area and may not be applicable to all regions, but are still a good guideline to help gain a basic understanding of what is in season when!

Warning: this post will be pretty much ALL pictures. But isn't that all we really care about when looking at blogs anyway...?

Tater Time :)

Beautiful, 30 pound baby! Organic Heirloom Moon and Stars Watermelon

Glad I got my tomatoes at the farmers market - these at Whole Foods were 3X the price!

Real Techniques: Review & Haul

I know a TON of people already know and love Real Techniques brushes, but I am finally jumping on the band wagon! I recently picked up the three brushes pictured above, from top to bottom they are the: Powder Brush, Blush Brush, and Expert Face brush. I have owned one Real Techniques brush before, the Setting Brush (shown below). I purchased the setting brush at Ulta probably close to 2 years ago and have been loving it. It has held up very well through travel, uses, and washing and has probably only shed a few hairs in all the time I've had it which is great.

Since I loved the Setting Brush so much I don't know what took me so long to finally try out some of RT's other brushes but I'm so glad I finally did :) So to start off I'll just quickly mention the things I love about the brushes in general, then get in to the more specific details about each brush and what I like to use them for.

So overall the thing I love most about these brushes is that they are soooo freaking SOFT!! I'm sure many of you who own one of these or who have felt one in a store can understand what I mean. With some brushes (even expensive/high end ones!) it can feel like the bristles are almost a bit sharp and pokey when the touch your face, but that is definitely not the case with these. I'm not sure if this has to do with the fact that they are synthetic or if it's how they're made and as long as they stay ultra soft and smooth I don't even care haha! Speaking of the fact that they're synthetic bristles, brings me to another thing I love about RT, all their products are Cruelty Free and not tested on animals! Although I do not exclusively use cruelty free makeup, I consider this to be a major bonus - props to the Chapman girls for keeping their products kind :) Another thing I have noticed, and loved, about RT brushes is that they seem to be very easy to clean. I can't say for sure, but I feel like it has to do with the fact that they are so fluffy and plush. Even though the brushes are all nicely full and dense the hair are long and very flexible, making it easier for the cleanser to do its job. The final thing I love about these brushes is the price. Here in the US, most of their face brushes range from 8 to 10 dollars, eye brushes are about $6, and they have some brush sets which range from $10-$18 depending on how many brushes it comes with. For the brushes I have I ended up paying: $9 each for the Expert Face Brush and Blush Brush, $10 for the large Powder Brush, and $8 for the Setting Brush, so 36 dollars for all four. I've also been loving the few Sigma brushes I have, and while they are more affordable than MAC they are still a bit on the pricey side (most eye brushes are $14+ and face brushes are $20-$30). So I would definitely recommend Real Techniques brushes to someone who is just getting in to makeup and doesn't have a fortune to spend on brushes or for anyone looking to expand their brush collection. They are such great quality you really can't go wrong! On to the specifics, first the Powder Brush...

This brush is BIG, almost like a kabuki I would say. But it is also super plush and does a nice job picking up product and dispersing it evenly. I mainly use this brush for either powder (MAC MSF Natural) or if I'm using an all-over bronzer and it does a great job for both of those purposes. I also really enjoy using this brush to help smooth and buff liquid foundation in to my skin after applying it with a BeautyBlender or my fingers to make it look more seamless. I probably wouldn't recommend using this to APPLY foundation, since its not quite dense enough, but I think it does an awesome job at smoothing out any lines and really helps you achieve a flawless look. Next, we have the Blush Brush...

I LOVE this brush! Like the others, it is super soft and fluffy, but because it is slightly tapered it still allows you to apply the blush precisely where you want it. I really love the tapered shape for this reason becuase sometimes when a blush brush is super fluffy it can spread the product around a bit "willy nilly" and leave you looking like you just sprinted a mile. Luckily, I haven't had that problem with this one! Since this brush is on the larger side you could also use it to powder your entire face. Last but certainly not least, the Expert Face Brush...

Let me just say that this brush has totally changed my opinion on using brushes for liquid foundation. Normally, if I'm wearing liquid foundation (which isn't super often - most days I don't wear makeup at all because I'm too busy hoarding it lol) I apply it with either my fingers or a BeautyBlender because I feel like, for me, it blends in best this way. If I use a brush, it usually makes my skin look patchy or leaves visible brush strokes - probably because I have very dry skin. However, with this expert face brush the foundation buffs in very smoothly without irritating my dry skin or leaving lines. I honestly don't know for sure what makes this brush so good for liquid foundation but these are my guesses: 1) the bristles are densely packed but still very flexible unlike some paddle-style foundation brushes which have more stiff hairs, and 2) the domed shape of the brush allows you to buff more smoothly than a flat top brush. Like I said those are just my guesses - but if anyone has other thoughts or ideas please let me know!

That pretty much sums up my little Real Techniques Review and Haul, hope it was helpful or interesting to somebody out there :) Have a great week everyone!

xoxo emma

(simple) Heirloom Tomato Salad Recipe + 2 additional tomato recipes

I'm back with another quick and easy salad recipe! I recently went to a local farmers market with my mom and aunt and came back 5 pounds of beautiful, heirloom tomatoes (I am also working on another post about the other farmers market goodies so be on the lookout for that!). They were all super ripe and ready to go so I had to come up with some quick ways to prepare them. For this recipe I only ended up using one of the six tomatoes that I got because it was so HUGE! You could totally substitute multiple smaller Roma tomatoes, a pint of cherry tomatoes, or whatever else you have on hand. **Be sure to check out the two bonus tomato recipes at the bottom!**

 (simple) Heirloom Tomato Salad Recipe:
- 1 BIG tomato, or several smaller. This would also be great with cherry tomatoes
- 1 bunch of cilantro chopped (about 1/4 cup)
- 2 or 3 green onions chopped (about 1/4 cup)
- Half of a large avocado or a whole small one
- Season with salt and any other spices you like (such as cumin)
- Be grateful to your local farmers and ENJOY! :)

Tomatoes as big as yo face!!

Since I still had a lot of tomatoes left over I made a few other quick tomato meals including a SUPER easy "Gazpacho" and my take on Tabbouleh / Tabouli (sp?). Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the gazpacho but it was literally just diced up tomatoes with garlic and salt so you're not missing much.

So to finish up the rest of the tomatoes I diced them all up in to smallish/medium sized chunks then placed them in a big bowl, making sure to get all the juices from the cutting board to the bowl. Since I had 5 pretty large tomatoes I'm estimating this ended up being about 5 or 6 cups once diced. I then added about 3 cloves of garlic, minced. This was the base for both the "Gazpacho" and Tabbouleh. After making the multi-purpose tomato 'Base' I just had to add a few finishing touches to achieve the two separate dishes. These recipes are below :) P.S. I only list the ingredients (not the method) because for both of these I literally just combined all the components in a large bowl and mixed - super simple!

 4 Ingredient "Gazpacho" Recipe:
- 1/2 of Tomato Base mentioned above, plus the majority of the liquid from this base (about 3 cups of diced tomatoes and 1.5 cloves minced garlic) -> I used all the liquid from the tomato base since I was going for a soup/gazpacho consistency, and my second recipe (the Tabbouleh) doesn't require any additional tomato juice or liquid
- 1/2 cup chopped parsley
- 1/2 to 1 tsp. coarse salt (depending on how salty you prefer it)

Fresh and Delicious Tabbouleh
- 1 cup (measured dry) of Freekeh or Bulgar cracked wheat (I like Freekeh because it sounds like FREAKY haha - the brand I used is Village Harvest Organic $10 for a 3 pound bag at Costco) >> combine with 2 and 1/4 cups of water and bring to boil, reduce to simmer, simmer covered for 12 mins, then remove from heat and let sit (still covered) while preparing other ingredients
- Remaining 1/2 of Tomato Base (about 3 cups of diced tomatoes and 1.5 cloves minced garlic)
- Juice of 2 Lemons (about 5 Tbsp - you can use less but I like it really lemony)
- 1 large Cucumber (I used the English / Hothouse variety b/c I prefer the thin skin and small seeds)
- 1 and 1/2 cup chopped Parsley (I know this sounds like a lot, but for good Tabbouleh you need it!)
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil (this can be omitted if you want it to be oil free)
- Salt & Pepper to taste (about 1tsp pepper and 2 tsp salt)
- Optional: additional minced or granulated garlic for added flavor. A 1/4 cup of chopped Dill is another great addition!
